PLusskilts, based in the Luss Pilgrimage Centre, creates traditional craft-made kilts, plaids, shawls and sashes, hand-sewn and individually tailored in a wide range of Clan, District and Contemporary tartans.   We specialise in the MacKessog tartans, designed and woven in Argyll exclusively for visitors to Luss.

Our men's kilts are made to the traditional military pattern, containing 7.5-8 metres of tartan depending on the sett (the pattern of the tartan).   A medium- or heavy-weight cloth is used, and is made up to your exact individual measurements;  our kilts are guaranteed for three generations, so can be passed on to your son and grandson as an heirloom!

Our ladies' kilts are made in any length, from mini- to full-length, our own design ensuring rather less weight than in a man's kilt.

A traditional kilt, with or without full Highland Dress, will usually take from 6-8 weeks to complete, depending on the tartan:  rarer tartans and special weaves will take longer.   It is always wise to order early to ensure that all is ready in good time!

Prices begin as below, and depend on weight and availability of the tartan.   The price of full Highland Dress varies according to choice of accessories -- sporran, sgian dhu, belt, etc; as well as the traditional designs of  these, we are agents for Redshank of Inveraray's wide range of original traditional and contemporary designs. With each kilt order we require a deposit of £100.00;  the balance is payable on completion.

THE MACKESSOG TARTANS

THE MACKESSOG...
...one of Scotland's newest tartans for one of her oldest saints.

pict0003.JPG2007_121717December0008.JPG
The MacKessog tartan was designed in 2006 to commemorate the saint who came to Loch Lomond-side in AD 510 to bring Christianity to the people of Argyll.

MacKessog (the Gaelic form of Saint  Kessog) founded a monastery on the island of Inch Tavannach and a church in Luss nearly 1,500 years ago.   In his memory we have created a tartan, designed by Redshank of Inveraray and hand-woven by Gordon Covell on the Isle of Islay, which is exclusive to the Church and Pilgrimage Centre of Luss. The tartan is based on the Bruce sett -- the veneration of Kessog by King Robert the Bruce, who led his soldiers into the battle of Bannockburn in the name of the blessed Kessog, established Luss as a major pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. The colours are:
2 shades of green for the hills, blue for the loch, a white stripe to create the Scottish saltire, a purple stripe for the heather and for Kessog's ecclesiastical significance, and a red stripe for his martyrdom --  the saint was murdered in AD 520 at Bandry, a small village just south of Luss.

OUR NEW DRESS MACKESSOG...

apr 1l.jpg29.3.08 022.jpg

Designed by Redshank of Inveraray and woven by Gordon Covell at the Islay Woollen Mill and by Robin Elliott in Selkirk in the Scottish borders, this tartan was designed according to the 19th century tradition of replacing one of the main colours with white, to create a lighter and more eye-catching tartan for ceremonial wear. This tartan is also known as the Luss Wedding Tartan.Kilts and wedding sashes are a speciality.

OUR EVEN NEWER HUNTING MACKESSOG ...

mar 31g.jpgmar 31y.jpg

Most clan tartans developed many different coloured versions of the same sett  or pattern, and we have followed suit with a Hunting MacKessog, in which, as in all hunting tartans, the colours are intended to be less visible against the land when hunting.
Currently only available in our own hand-woven cloth, we hope to offer kilts in this tartan next year in our Saint Kessog celebrations of 2010.

All pilgrims visiting Luss, and those who chose to be married here,

are granted the right to wear the MacKessog tartans as their own.

HIGHLAND DRESS FOR YOUR SCOTTISH WEDDING

Nothing is more impressive for a  Scottish wedding than traditional highland dress!

PLusskilts, based in the Luss Pilgrimage Centre, creates traditional craft-made kilts, plaids, shawls and sashes, hand-sewn and individually tailored in a wide range of Clan, District and Contemporary tartans.   We specialise in the MacKessog tartans, designed and woven in Argyll exclusively for visitors to Luss and those who come to Luss to be married, to whom is granted the right to wear the MacKessog as their own;  so even if you
have no family connection with Scotland, you and your family and descendants are entitled to wear this tartan by right.
We can provide full Highland Dress -- formal or informal jackets, waistcoats, shoes,
hose, sporrans, belts and accessories -- and, after all, the bride is getting a new dress for
the special day, so why should the groom not invest in his own outfit -- that will serve
superbly for all future formal occasions!

For the bride, we make shawls, wraps and arisaids (a traditional Scottish form of
pashmina) -- and have been known to make the dress itself!   A tartan sash is an elegant
addition to a traditional white wedding dress, and the Loch Lomond weather makes a wrap, cloak or Victorian muff a welcome accessory  for our autumn, winter and spring weddings (and summer, too, on occasion!).

We can help you research your tartan, guide you in taking accurate measurements, decide on design, and advise on all you need to make your wedding truly Scottish!

We are always happy to discuss your own designs,  and enjoy making additional items, eg bags, ring-cushions, etc, on request.
Kilts, plaids, etc. can be ordered in almost any tartan for normal delivery in 6-8 weeks, and  posted to any destination, UK or abroad.
